Frank Lacy, an electrical engineer and tech from Mississippi, was renowned in the recording industry for his custom-built recording gear. He worked closely with notable producers such as Terry Manning and Dennis Herring, designing and building one-of-a-kind gear under the names Lucas (named after Manning's son) and JFL Audio. Lacy's expertise was in taking existing classic designs as those from Pultec, Universal Audio, SSL, and Quad Eight, and improving upon them. He could also be counted on to come up with unique one-off designs based on specific requests from his clients.

Lacy's boutique electronics were highly sought after by recording engineers and studios, but only a select few, like Manning and Herring, had the opportunity to acquire them. Despite his considerable talent, Lacy produced a limited number of custom electronics that ended up becoming an integral part of shaping the sound of numerous albums.
